From the south: Exit 1 in West Virginia from I-77 northbound. The ramp is right after you exit the tunnel.
As the signs on the interstate will tell you, be in the right lane when you enter the tunnel. And be aware it's a sharp
turn! Take a right at the stop sign onto US52 north. Go approximately 3 miles and bear right onto US460 toward Princeton.
About 1/2 mile later, take a left at the first light onto US19 / 52 truck route. A good landmark here is the new bridges that
are being built. You can't miss them as you go under them. This will take you into and through Bluefield.
From
the north: Take exit 9 from I-77 southbound and follow US 460 west approximately 7.5 miles. Take a right off of US460 onto Green Valley
Road. Green Valley Road becomes Green Valley Methodist Church Rd. All of this happens in about 2/10 of a mile.
Turn right onto WV 123 (Airport Road). Follow WV123 about 6 miles to the intersection of US 52 near Bluewell. Take a right
at the stoplight onto US52 north. Bluefield and Bluewell are good places to stock up on supplies.
Get everything
you think you will need when passing through.
Continue on US52 north toward Welch. Watch the signs for your distance to
Northfork (Approx 17 miles). When you see the Northfork City Limits sign, the speed limit goes down to 25 MPH and you will make
the first right after the city limit sign. This is a very sharp turn, heck almost a U turn. You will immediantly cross
some R/R tracks. This is Northfork / Ashland Road or route 17. Stay on this road and 5.6 miles later you will come to
the intersection with Ashland / Crumpler road. Bear left (but don't take any hard lefts) and continue toward Crumpler.
Note that a right will take you to the Ashland ATV Resort. Another good landmark here is the Ashland Company Store over to your
right and the HFM Indian Ridge Trailhead. You are about 3.5 miles from the Stair Steps now.
Continue into Crumpler and
drive past the Rose Bud. Continue up this twisitng narrow road, letting your hauler enjoy the last of the pavement. When
the pavement ends, you will be looking at a guard rail. You have reached the Steps. For Mountain Top, continue up the
gravel road driving past the guard rail and the stair steps. Just keep going UP. This road ends at the cabins.
And
YES - There are other slightly shorter ways to drive in, but if this is your first time or if you are pulling a trailer, I would recommend
these routes.
How do you get there??? Follow these directions. You can also Google or Mapquest Zip Code 24868.
